Chief Charlie Garza, U.S. Navy Retired
for State Board of Education
USS Tennessee (SSBN 734)

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the soldier, who salutes the flag, who serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag....

I have dedicated over twenty years of my life serving my country as a proud member of the Navy. My service in the Navy has had a lasting affect on my life and I am grateful for the strength and character I developed. Although operations were extremely difficult, there is no doubt that I am a better person as a result of my service.

I am proud of our Navy's traditions and am especially proud of those who still continue to serve in all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.

I feel blessed to have such a loving supportive family that understands the challenges that face a military family. They gave me the strength I needed to honorably serve my country and be a productive citizen. I am proud to fight for their freedom, and the freedom of generations to come.

I have made many lifelong friends in the Navy. Without reservation, I put my life in their hands. As a result, we have a sacred bond that cannot be broken. The character and integrity of the friends I have made in the Navy is incomparable. I am fortunate to share many good times with my friends and family. This is why I value my country and serve with a grateful heart.
